The Sarkar is a Hindi-language biographical-drama film based on the life of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. It was written and directed by Renowned filmmaker Sudhir Mishra and produced by Billa Productions. The film premiered on March 17th 2018 at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival and released nationwide on May 3rd 2018. The film is based on the book of the same name by Mridula Garg, which is based on the daily diaries of Padmaja Naidu, an Indian independence activist and close friend of Nehru.The trailer for this movie was released on April 10th, 2018. The film made its world premiere at 63rd Berlin International Film Festival on 17 March 2018 in Berlin. This is the second film by Sudhir Mishra to have a world premiere at Berlinale after "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi" (2003). The Sarkar was initially slated to premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, but due to unavailability of screens, it was subsequently moved to Berlinale. It was screened in the official competition category of the festival. The film released on 3rd May 2018 with 5000 screens in India and 14 countries worldwide. It opened to a very impressive response at the box office and was declared an average grosser after its first weekend with its opening weekend collecting Rs 20.55 crore nett at the domestic box office and Rs 4.11 crore in overseas market [ $ million] with its opening day collections at Rs 12.30 crore [ $ million]. The film's performance in its second weekend is said to be below expectations, collecting just Rs 5 crore in India and $9000 in UK over two days i. e. Rs 2.62 crore [ $ million] and £1.4 million [ $ million] respectively. The film collected a total of gross Rs 81.3 crore in its lifetime run in the domestic market and a total of Rs 1620 crore in overseas markets after release of Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Bengali versions of the Sarkar in the domestic market alone. Reviews for "The Sarkar" have been positive, with most praising its performances by lead actors Zaira Wasim and Amruta Khanvilkar, but also stating that it does not deliver on its promise to be a "Nehru biopic". Baradwaj Rangan praised the performances of lead actors Zaira Wasim and Amruta Khanvilkar, calling them "career best" performances, but also wrote "Mishra treats this life with an understated solemnity that doesn’t allow for much dramatic urgency or polemical punch, which means that "The Sarkar" never quite kicks into high gear even when the stakes are highest.
